Big Updates for Newport Beach

May 10, 2017

“It is time we ended this reliance on the government process and renewed our faith in the human process.”

Town Hall Meeting

On May 1st I had the pleasure of hosting my first Town Hall Meeting. Good attendance, and excellent support from City staff. A variety of items were presented and discussed. You can count on this being a regular activity of mine; an excellent vehicle for keeping you up-to-date on happenings within District 5 as well as the overall city.

Update on JWA Flight Take-off Paths:

March 28th was a BIG Day! In case the sky looked different to you on that day, the second phase of NextGen’s flight alignments out of JWA happened. This should have been the most impactful day yet, given the specific change.

Recall that:

- On March 2, about 50% of all flights going South or East were directed to fly down a new path called PIGGN. This wasn’t too big a deal because the path was pretty close to the way they used to fly.

- Between March 2 and today, the other flights going North and to Las Vegas and Salt Lake City were flying down older, less precise paths that took them over homes on the westside of town, over Dover Shores and Galaxy, and sometimes straying closer to Castaways, even a bit near Lido Isle.

- But today (again, 4/28/17) all flights are on two nearly identical alignments that generally take them over the same PIGGN path.

Early observations on 4/28/17 showed that all of the commercial flights on that day were flying these new departures, and continue to do so. The flights straying West seem nearly gone. Folks in Westcliff and Dover Shores should see a difference. Folks on Balboa Island are likely to see a narrowing generally over the center part of the Island (Ruby Ave.).

Park Avenue Bridge Update

We are getting closer! We are at the 5 yard line, and just need to get through a few linebackers (the utilities). May 9 is scheduled for the electrical switchover.

Plans are in the works for the Grand Opening of the new bridge. The contractor will be hosting a “Residents Appreciation Lunch” on the bridge before the Grand Opening. Ribbon cutting/ bridge opening will be on a Tuesday afternoon. A mini car show of island resident classic cars will be the first vehicles to drive over the new bridge. Should be a fun afternoon!

The Renaming of Balboa Island Park

In memory of Ralph Rodheim, a group of Island folks approached me about renaming the Balboa Island Park in his name. Per Council Policy, I made the request that this be agendized for a Council Meeting, and that happened at the April 25th Meeting. At that meeting I pulled this item from the agenda and requested that it be sent to the Parks Beaches & Recreation Commission (PB&R) for review and recommendation. That referral has taken place, and will be taken up at the May 2nd PB&R Commission Meeting. The meeting begins at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall. You are encouraged to attend this meeting if you are a champion of this effort.
